InTASC Standard:

Standard #10: Leadership and Collaboration

The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During my spring semester of 2021 in my EDUC 240-Introduction to Physical Education and Health for Teachers course, I had the opportunity to work collaboratively with my group and create a Healthy Snack and Activity Calendar. I had to choose one month of the year where I made a calendar that included healthy snacks and fitness activities that students and their parents could do at home. I had to choose a grade level from K-5 to base my calendar off. Each snack and activity must only be used once and I needed to alternate between snacks and physical activity which included roughly 15 snacks and 15 physical activities. I also had to include the type of snack and the amount the child would be eating depending on the group level/age we chose. The physical activities had to include all four elements of the FITT Principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type). I also had to create a Family Fitness Challenge Newsletter about this activity for the parents so they would know what to do and motivate them to get involved with their child at home.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Throughout the process of creating this Healthy Snack and Activity Calendar, I learned how to collaborate with my classmates and parents by creating a Healthy Snack and Activity Calendar where parents and teachers take responsibility for their child’s learning. I learned a lot about how important collaboration is to get a job done. Between four group members, we had to do a lot of research regarding physical activities we could use for the grade level we chose, the appropriate snack portions we needed to provide in the calendar, and come up with a spectacular Family Fitness Challenge Newsletter to motivate parents to be more involved with their child that will ensure learner growth. I learned how important it is to be organized when planning this calendar and being in constant communication with my group to know exactly the appropriate exercise and portions of snacks that need to be added to each day in the calendar.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I have demonstrated my competence in Standard 10 - Leadership and Collaboration by creating a  Healthy Snack and Activity Calendar that showcases collaboration, leadership, and teamwork. I’m able to create a calendar where parents and teachers take responsibility for their child’s learning by creating a newsletter where parents feel motivated to be more involved with their child and ensure their child’s growth. I can apply Abraham Maslow’s Theory “Hierarchy of Needs” (Mcleod, 2020) because he believes in human potential, and how we fulfill that potential and I believe that this is a good tool for teachers to use to be able to apply different exercises and age-appropriate snacks based on the each student’s needs to ensure their growth. I’m able to take responsibility for my students' learning by researching different physical activities and snacks with age-appropriate portions to incorporate in my calendar. I was able to collaborate with my learners and their families by creating a Family Fitness Challenge Newsletter to motivate them to get involved with their children at home.
